Church doesn't start until the service is over. The fastest way from "I visited once" to "this is my church" is joining a team — you'll find your 4 to 7 friends and make Sunday happen for the next person who walks in nervous.
What are Substance Teams?
Community, "the one," and the task — in that order.
At Substance, we want every person to find 4 to 7 friends to do life with, and volunteering is the easiest first step. Most teams serve on Sundays, though plenty happen midweek too.
As a team, we do three things on repeat: build real community with each other, reach out to "the one" who feels alone, and do the task with excellence. You don't need experience — just a willingness to show up.
Joining a team is easy
- 1Fill out the volunteer interest application — takes about two minutes.
- 2We follow up and place you on a team, usually within the week.
- 3Show up, meet your people, and start making a difference.

Greeter
Makes everyone who walks through the doors feel welcomed and at home. If you've got a smile and a high-five, this one's for you.
Parking
The very first impression for guests. Perfect for energetic, friendly people who don't mind a little time outdoors.
Usher
Creates a comfortable environment in our services so people can focus on and enjoy worship.
Coffee
Sets a welcoming tone with friendly hospitality and free coffee — the unofficial front porch of the church.
Admin
For volunteers with a flexible schedule and administrative skills who can help with midweek office needs.
Facilities
Keeps a spirit of excellence across campus — clean, safe, and well-maintained so everyone has a great experience.
Kids
Inspires the next generation to love God, love others, and change the world. Ages 6 weeks through 5th grade.
Youth
Builds a space for students in grades 6–12 to explore faith, plug into the church, and find their 4–7 friends.
Prayer
Offers personal prayer at the end of each service and covers the church, its people, and their requests.
Media
Creates a professional, excellent audio/visual experience across all our services and events.
Safety
Keeps our facilities safe and running smoothly while assisting anyone in need.
Merch
Helps raise funds by running the Substance store — all proceeds go toward Heart for the House.
Worship
Leads people into God's presence through music. Musicians and vocalists start with an audition at substancechurch.com/worship.
DJ Team
Sets the tone in the lobby before service — a fun, relevant atmosphere from the moment people arrive.
Photography
Authentically captures moments of the Sunday experience to welcome others into the Substance story.
Teams and Small Groups go together
Serving is how you meet people; a Small Group is how you actually get known. Most people at Substance do both — serve on a team Sunday morning, then gather with a group during the week. Between the two, that "4 to 7 friends" thing stops being a slogan and starts being your calendar.
